The Portland Home & Garden Show brings together the community and building industry professionals. In 2023, the Professional Women in Building (PWB) participated in the annual expo to celebrate and elevate women who work in home building and inspire the next generation.
TL;DR
We get it! Please jump to our highlight list featuring the top five takeaways from the 2023 Portland Home & Garden Show.
An unexpected snowstorm caused a slow start, but everyone who came to the Portland Expo Center was passionate about home building, home improvement, green building, or gardening. Most visitors were glad to visit with the PWB members staffing the booth. The crowd was eager to support PWB, take a photo, participate in our fun activities, or purchase one of the books we had promoting early education about careers in construction or the skilled trades. With nearly all of the donated books sold, more than 40 households have these inspiring books. The over $700 raised will help support the ongoing educational opportunities for the members of the PWB.
For More information on the books featured at the book sale, please browse the PWB Recommended Reading List. The remaining copies of the books will be available for sale at upcoming PWB events, please browse the calendar for an event that works with your schedule.
The Community Demand for Skilled Women Trades
This event was about more than raising money for PWB members passionate about impacting the industry. Melissa Galland, PWB Chair, said, "We loved connecting with the community and seeing the kids get excited by our booth. As women in the industry, the most exciting thing we learned during the Home and Garden show was how much our community wants more access to women-owned and women-led construction businesses."
Inspired by the number of people asking for a list, the PWB Communications Committee is already working on adding "Women Who Build" to the website and anticipates launching in the second week of March.
